Welcome to the 35th International Society for Teacher Education (ISfTE) Seminar 2015.
ISfTE is an independent organization of teacher educators free of external political or economic controls. It is dedicated to the improvement of teacher education in all settings by fostering discussion, critical analysis, and dissemination of ideas from research and innovative practice in teacher education.
Since 1981, this international seminar has convened in a different country each year. In that time it has taken place in every world continent and region. Recent venues include Brazil (2010), Norway (2011), Bhutan (2012), Hong Kong (2013), Turkey (2014). Future seminars include South Africa (2016).
The six-day seminar attracts about 100 – 180 participants from all over the world who collectively examine and discuss the critical issues facing global teacher education. A range of keynote presentations on critical topics by acknowledged experts drives the focus of the proceedings. Participants have the opportunity to present “prior to publication” papers within small peer group settings for collegiate consideration, discussion and counsel. Outcomes include press releases, public service announcements (PSAs), published proceedings, journal publications, including in JISTE, the society’s own refereed journal, joint research projects, faculty and student exchange programs, associated special events, and the continuing development of a global teacher education network. This is a vibrant event that brings professionals from a wide range of global societies, cultures, communities, situations, and circumstances together in a shared cause.
We are looking forward to seeing educators, teachers, researchers, and policy makers from around the world at the 35th ISfTE Conference, which will be held at Montclair State University, New Jersey, in June 2015.
Dr. Jacalyn Willis
ISfTE 2015 Seminar Convener
On behalf of the Montclair State University community, I extend a warm welcome to our colleagues in the International Society for Teacher Education on the occasion of the 35th Annual Seminar. You will find that Montclair State has deep roots in the effective preparation for teachers. Over the past century, we have grown from a teacher training college into a comprehensive university with expertise in many fields of study while retaining a commitment to educational research and training. During your time at the University, I am certain that you will find a welcoming and exciting environment for the Seminar and the opportunity to cultivate global collaborations to improve education at all levels.
Susan Cole, Ph.D.
President, Montclair State University
If a teacher graduates today and teaches for 30 years, and their students live for 70 years, teacher education programs are actually preparing teachers for 22nd century learners.” Craig Kissock, Education Week, March 2014
ISfTE 2015 will focus on the critical global issues that teachers and their students are already facing, and will certainly be facing, in the near future. For most humans this includes many, if not all, of the following:
…and others not yet foreseen.
These are factors set to collide with contemporary educational systems, originally developed for a very different set of historical and global circumstances – systems that are already proving inappropriate, irrelevant and unsustainable in the near future.
ISfTE 2015 is a natural forum for understanding the complexities of these critical global issues and their implications for teacher education. Through inspirational presentations and associated activities, critical thinking, discussion, and small peer interactions, we hope participants will assess ways in which teacher professional development can be re-versioned to ensure current and future teachers have the understanding, skills and tools needed to teach in a time of rapid global change.
