Montclair State University is located in Northern New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, New York City. Initiated in 1908, MSU began life as a two-year teacher training college, with 8 faculty members, 187 students, and a first graduating class of 45 students.
In 1924 the institutions became Montclair State Teachers College became and developed a four-year (Bachelors of Arts) program in pedagogy becoming the first US institute to do so. 1958 saw it merge with Panzer College to become Montclair State College and then a comprehensive multi-purpose institution in 1996. April 27, 1994, and in the same year the school became Montclair State University.
It has offered Master of Arts programs since 1932, Master of Business Administration since 1981, Master of Education since 1985, Master of Science since 1992, Master of Fine Arts since 1998, Doctor of Education since 1999, Doctor of Environmental Management since 2003 and Doctor of Science since 2005.
Our ISfTE hosts within Montclair State University is PRISM. Teacher educators associated with PRISM have participated in ISfTE seminars for many years and have been highly involved with international teacher education activities linking with many parts of the world. PRISM is essentially a science and mathematics inservice teacher education provider. It has a very successful record serving New Jersey school districts.
PRISM serves school districts by improving the way science and mathematics are taught. PRISM scientists, educators, and classroom teachers are content-area specialists in curriculum, professional development, and pedagogy. PRISM programs emphasize inquiry-based and constructivist teaching strategies, deep content knowledge development, effective curriculum planning, and instructional technology to improve learning outcomes in science and mathematics.
PRISM staff and programs are housed in the Bristol-Myers Squibb Center for Science Teaching and Learning on the first floor of Blanton Hall. This facility is dedicated to teaching teachers and is fully equipped for experiential learning programs and video-chat connections for distance learning.
